The 'Monument for Dutch soldiers' in Obbicht (municipality of Sittard-Geleen) is a memorial stone that is mounted on several rails. A pit ring filled with concrete has been built on both sides of the stone. The whole thing is placed on Maas boulders.

Monument for Dutch Soldiers

On 10 May 1940, this bridge over the Juliana Canal suddenly became a war zone, during which soldiers Mindert Epema and Henk Nijland were killed during a four-hour battle. According to eyewitnesses, at least 26 German soldiers were killed.

On 10 May 1992, this memorial stone, designed by René Vencken, was unveiled. Because the bridge was barricaded with pot rings and railway tracks at the time, the memorial stone was placed on a number of rails. On either side of the stone, a pot ring is placed that serves as a flower box.

The monument was renovated in 2020. The Ecrevisse Committee organises the annual commemoration of the dead here on 4 May.
