Since the 14th century, the meeting place of the "Noble Drinking Fellows" as an association of the Breisgau knights was located here, on the south side of the Münsterplatz.

Its president, Ferdinand Sebastian von Sickingen-Hohenburg, had the baroque building built in 1756, right next to the Historical Department Store. Just one year after completion, the knights sold their social hall to the Estates, for whom it served as a meeting place until 1806 and then passed to the Grand Ducal Court.

After the founding of the Archbishopric of Freiburg, Bernhard Boll became the first archbishop to move into the building in 1832, which from then on was called the Archbishop's Palace and used as such until 1944. After the building was completely destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt with sensitivity for the historical structure. The baroque façade was preserved - only the shutters were omitted.

Today, 350 talented boys and girls from the famous cathedral singing school sing in the Bishop's and Mozart Hall. The rooms of the Archbishop's Palace and the associated cathedral chapel are used as rehearsal rooms and for music lessons.

The Haus zum Ritter, later the Archbishop's Palace, today the Cathedral Choir School, is a representative town house in Freiburg im Breisgau.

The Haus zum Ritter was built in 1756 by Johann Jacob Fechter as a social and assembly house for the Upper Austrian knighthood of Breisgau and the nobility who had a share in the Breisgau Estate, in Freiburg im Breisgau on the south side of Münsterplatz, on the orders of the then President Ferdinand Sebastian von Sickingen-Hohenburg on the site of a medieval predecessor building.

From 1766 onwards, the house was used as a meeting place for the Estates. After the abolition of the Estates in 1806, the Grand Ducal Court was located here until 1824. In 1832, with the reorganization of the Archbishopric of Freiburg (1821), it became the residence of the Archbishop of Freiburg and thus the Archbishop's Palace. After another renovation in 1995/96, it has since become the cathedral choir school and the seat of the Freiburg Cathedral Choir Boys.

The Ritter House was completely burned down during the bombing of Freiburg in 1944. The reconstruction in the early 1950s was based on the structure of the house that had been changed in the 19th century.
