Leonberg's green city center was created after the gypsum factory located here closed in 1977.

The Eppinger & Schüle gypsum factory was the most efficient in all of southern Germany in its heyday. A small railway brought the gypsum to the train station. This industrial track along the Roman road, the legendary "Gleisle", marked the border between Leonberg and Eltingen. In the 1930s, the company management let the people of Leonberg and Eltingen use the lake in the gypsum quarry as an outdoor swimming pool.

The city park was opened in 1979. The former gypsum factory site had been completely redesigned according to plans by the landscape architects Luz+Partner, Stuttgart and Eppinger+Schmid, Leonberg.

The sculptural design of the 26 m high water mountain in the center of the park was undertaken by the architect and sculptor Günter E. Herrmann, Ostfildern.

The city park has been the venue for the children's and youth days in Leonberg since 1999. Concerts are regularly held on the lake stage.

In 1989, the peace memorial by the Leonberg sculptor Hans D. Sailer, which was the result of a sculpture competition, was inaugurated in the upper part of the city park. The central commemoration of Remembrance Day takes place here every year.
