Part of the eastern city fortification of Ettlingen as a simple wall with defensive towers and moat north of the Alb.

In a city wall, the city gates and the inlet and outlet of a river are potential weak points from a defensive perspective. Therefore, a defensive tower called the "Gans" reinforced the wall at this point where the Alb flows through the city. The unusual name may have something to do with the fact that the fortified tower served as a women's prison.

The "Gans" defensive tower was demolished in 1871, leaving behind the eastern city wall.

The northern old town - unlike the southern old town - was secured with a simple wall, defensive towers and a ditch that had been drained since the 18th century and used as a cattle pasture.
