The source is located at 707 meters in the middle of the Münchberg city forest. The source hiking trail between the municipality of Zell and the Waldstein leads to the square shaded by beeches. The water of the Saxon Saale wells up from the tunnel of a former mine. A stone plaque above the mouth hole provides information with an inscription about the spring being tapped in 1869 by the towns of Münchberg, Schwarzenbach/Saale, Hof, Weißenfels and Halle.

The source of the Saxon Saale lies in the now-closed “Hülffe Gottes” mine tunnel. At its source border we find documented on a black marble tablet: "Source of the Saale, taken by the cities of Münchberg, Schwarzenbach, Hof, Halle, Weißenfels, 1869."

The highlight shown here presents the source of the Saxon Saale. The source of the Franconian Saale is fed by two springs, one emerging in Alsleben and the other in Obereßfeld in Lower Franconia, in the Rhön-Grabfeld district.
