The Napoleon Road ends at the Opicina Obelisk (325 m), erected in 1830 to commemorate the visit of Austrian Emperor Franz I. The former historic tramway from Trieste once led up to the obelisk.
At the obelisk, the karst plateau drops steeply down to Trieste – this was the "magical" spot where travelers in earlier centuries saw the sea for the first time after days and often weeks of arduous travel.
