The Spechtsbrunn barracks of the GDR border troops were located in the heavily secured restricted area near the inner-German border. It was built starting in August 1971 and was occupied by the 10th Border Company on December 1, 1971. On February 28, 1985, the 12th Border Company took over. From August 1989 to May 1990, the buildings were a reserve facility of the Sonneberg Border Command. After reunification, the area was transferred to the Federal Property Office; today it is privately owned and no longer in use.

The former border company 12 Spechtsbrunn (at times also referred to as the 10th border company) was a military property of the GDR border troops directly on the Thuringian Rennsteig. The barracks were located in the heavily secured restricted area not far from the inner-German border with Bavaria.

Hiking

The 12th Border Company of Spechtsbrunn was formerly stationed on this site. The company was subordinate to the 15th Border Regiment "Herbert Warnke" in Sonneberg. Today it is abandoned and derelict.

February 28, 1985 to August 1, 1989: 12th Border Company

August 2, 1989 to May 31, 1990: Reserve Site
