The Emden Wall was extended shortly after 1600 by the city architect Gerrit Everts Piloot and reworked by the well-known fortress engineer Johan van Valckenborgh from 1615 onwards. The documents from this period contain detailed information on the height, width and location of each section of the wall. Emden still shows the original evidence of this architecture today. Emden's connection with the Dutch fortress building style of the 16th/17th century is interesting.

The future importance of the wall - regardless of its original purpose of defending the city - lies in the gardens. Tree planting has been documented since the 17th century and there are reports from 1813 onwards about the maintenance of the wall promenades.
