Rescue at sea has been of great importance on the coast for centuries. The Emden chief customs inspector Georg Breusing founded the “Association for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People in East Friesland” in 1861 - the predecessor of the DGzRS in Bremen. This sea rescue cruiser was named in his honor in 1963. The ship was stationed on the North Sea island of Borkum until 1988. During this time, the rescue workers rescued 1,672 people from distress at sea or from life-threatening danger with the “Georg Breusing”. The work of the sea rescuers is financed exclusively from donations - without any support from taxes. On 60 sea rescue cruisers and boats, 180 permanent employees and over 800 voluntary rescue workers are deployed to provide rapid assistance in the event of an accident at sea. Since the founding of the "German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons" more than 85,000 people have been rescued from distress at sea - as many people as live in a medium-sized town.

All measures of the maritime search and rescue service (SAR = Search and Rescue) are coordinated by the DGzRS sea rescue center in Bremen. The DGzRS is responsible for this sovereign task. The area of operation includes the North Sea and Baltic Sea - from Borkum in the west to Uekermünde in the east, one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. From the 7-meter sea rescue boat to the 46-meter sea rescue cruiser, the rescuers are on call around the clock. In order to document the great importance of the rescue work for the city of Emden, the sea rescue cruiser "Georg Breusing" has been a floating museum in the Emden Ratsdelft since 1988. The support group ensures that the ship is presented to the public in running condition and as a technical monument. You will experience an insight into the important work of the sea rescuers up close. Join us on board.

From 1963 to July 1988, the sea rescue cruiser "Georg Breusing" was deployed from the DGzRS station in Borkum to secure an area characterized by numerous reefs and dangerous shoals and respected by seafarers of all nations. The crews under the foremen Wilhelm Eilers and later Karl-Friedrich Brückner rescued 1,672 people from distress at sea between 1963 and 1988 or freed them from critical dangerous situations. Until 1988, the ship was stationed on the North Sea island of Borkum. 🛟
