A woman had two daughters: one very hardworking, the other lazy. The mother preferred her lazy daughter and so the hardworking one had to do all the work herself. One day her hands got bloody from spinning yarn and she went to the well to wash out the spool. When it fell in, the girl jumped behind it.
She woke up in the kingdom of Frau Holle. She lived with her and helped her with the housework. When the bedding was shaken out so that the feathers flew, they fell to the world as snowflakes. As a reward for her help, the hardworking girl was showered with gold as she left, which stuck with her for the rest of her life. When she saw this, her sister wanted the same and jumped into the well. But as a thank you for her laziness, bad luck fell on her that wouldn't go away.
