The Stadtstreek flowing past the reservoir was created artificially in 1566. The rubble from a large Bran-des was dumped into the little river Alt-Wiedau. So they built a new watercourse as a canal through the middle of the city. Due to a provision in the legacy of the widow Anna Magdalena Schmidt from 1833, two Rotenburg locksmiths made the iron grating on the Streek in 1866. The bridge is decorated with geraniums every May. It is therefore also known as the "Geranium Bridge".
