The dike invites you to unwind. The view of the Rhine meadows is characterized by peace and vastness. Only non-motorized vehicles are allowed on the Krone. It has a nice view over Schenkenschanz, but the ferry from Düffelward there since 2016 is no longer in operation. Thus one reaches only over Griethausen to Schenkenschanz. On the section is still the lock Wardhausen / Brienen and the Johanna Sebus monument.

"The Griethauser Altrhein is a tranquil body of water and, at first glance, doesn't seem to have much in common with the main channel. But appearances are deceiving; this still water is also part of the Rhine.

Over time, the main channel was developed for freight transport and flood protection, but before that, the landscape around the Rhine was completely different!

The river dominated the landscape with its enormous meanders and numerous side channels. It breathed in rhythm with its water level, and a diverse flora and fauna thrived – perfectly adapted and sensitively attuned to the moods of the mighty river. A single flood, however, could be enough to change its main channel. What had recently been THE river was now a side channel, potentially becoming an old Rhine channel.

Finally, the straightening of the Rhine completely separated many of its meanders and side channels from the main channel. Within a short time, the lushly populated waters became drained meadows and floodplains, leaving only a few aquatic habitats. For the For the communities of life dependent on the Rhine, this was a catastrophe. The decline in fish populations in the Rhine is not solely due to pollution, which has decreased significantly thanks to our efforts. Even in clean water, many species lack suitable breeding grounds, as there are no calm side channels and hardly any remaining oxbow lakes. With the disappearance of birds, fish, insects, and plants, the very specialized ecosystem dependent on the Rhine, which defined its character, is vanishing. These habitats are therefore an ecological treasure, and preserving them must be a top priority!

Reconnecting the Rhine to the river, or maintaining fish passage, are crucial elements. But it is equally important to allow the main channel, with its recurring floods, to occasionally return to its former course.

Reconnecting the Rhine to the river, or rather, maintaining fish passage, are important steps.
