The three-wing cloister is located in the inner courtyard and is only accessible via the cathedral and is included in the price of a tour of the cathedral.

In honor of Albert von Buxhoeveden, the first bishop of Riga (from 1201 to 1229) and the instigator of the construction of Riga Cathedral, the remarkable Albert statue was erected in the inner courtyard of the cathedral.

The vaulted three-wing cloister, 188 m long, was used for church processions in the Middle Ages and connected the archbishop's cathedral with the monastery rooms and the residence of the cathedral chapter. The cathedral chapter, the highest spiritual council, moved here around 1215, when the eastern end of the church and monastery with the cloister and chapter hall was probably already finished. In the niches above the arcades are the coats of arms of the families, clubs and corporations that donated their funds to the restoration of the cloister and the inner courtyard. The restoration began in 1885, during which the church and the rooms of the former monastery as well as the cloister were restored.

The cloisters have developed into a small museum worth seeing, with, for example, a clock, cannons, a rider on horseback, etc. The objects on display all come from Riga.

When you enter the courtyard, an impressive backdrop opens up: red brick vaults, once used for processions, connect the archiepiscopal cathedral with the monastery rooms. Since the early 13th century, this place has fascinated pilgrims and travelers alike. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that many of the objects on display, such as cannons, bells and other artifacts, come directly from the city of Riga. They provide an insight into the city's turbulent history and the architectural development of the cathedral.

What makes this place so special is the noticeable contrast between the peaceful atmosphere of the courtyard and the rich history reflected in the museum's exhibits. From the monastery building, you have a fantastic view of the imposing cathedral, whose tower dominates the sky above Riga. Originally built in 1211 under Bishop Albert von Buxhoeveden, the cathedral went through numerous architectural changes and is now the largest medieval church in the Baltics.

The cloister, whose restoration began in the 19th century, is not only a place of peace but also of history. Above the arcades you can see the coats of arms of various families and associations that contributed to the restoration. When you visit, you can feel the connection between the religious and secular life that has pulsated here for centuries.
