The national park (Parcul National Muntii Roidnei) covers the areas of Bistrița-Năsăud and Maramureș counties in the central area of the Rodna Mountains. Not only the geology and geomorphology of the mountains are important, but also the many animal and plant species found here, many of them endemic. The park has existed since 1990. Of the total area of 46,399 hectares, 3,300 hectares have been declared a biosphere reserve.
