In Bemmel, along the Waal River, a hidden caisson harbor and tank casemates were built during the war. Fragments of these remain today, but are difficult to access on a sand mining site. An information panel on site provides information in Dutch about the history of this facility.

The casemates
“At Bemmel, along the Waal, a caisson harbour had been built in secret, into which the weir had sailed. Tank casemates had been built in a semi-circle around it for defence. They consist of concrete containers into which a Sherman tank, left over from the war, had been driven. The wheels and caterpillar tracks had been removed. The barrel could still be used for a cannon or machine gun and there was still an access hatch in it. At the time the war broke out, a number of soldiers had to be housed there. If the casemate were ever hit by the enemy, the men would have been buried immediately. There was a military camp at the harbour.
