    Hiking

The Hambach open-cast mine was opened in 1978 near the Niederzier district of Hambach. At its peak, the mine, which at times reached depths of up to 411 meters, extracted so much lignite for the company's own power plants that it covered five percent of Germany's total electricity demand. Bucket-wheel excavators are a hallmark of Rhenish lignite mining. The largest self-propelled mining machines in the world operate in the Hambach mine. These steel giants, almost 100 meters high and up to 240 meters long, can extract up to 240,000 cubic meters of solid coal or soil per day.
