Wanssum (Limburgish: Wânsem) is a village in North Limburg located on the Maas. Until 1969 it was an independent municipality together with the village of Geijsteren and then part of the former municipality of Meerlo-Wanssum. Since 2010, Wanssum has been part of the merged municipality of Venray. The village had 1,900 inhabitants on January 1, 2023.

The oldest known mention of the aldermen of Wanssum dates from October 2, 1324. The aldermen's bench did not have its own seal until 1630, it had the deeds sealed by the sheriff or lord. The seal of 1630 shows the archangel Michael standing on a dragon. He thrusts a lance into the dragon's mouth with his right hand and holds a raised sword in his left hand.

The village was located in Upper Gelre and was part of the Land of Kessel, which belonged to the Duke of Gelre - and later the Spanish King as his successor from 1543. When the Spanish royal family became extinct, the War of the Spanish Succession followed, which led to Wanssum also being occupied by the Prussians and formally becoming Prussian in 1713. This remained the case until the French finally conquered Prussian Gelder in 1794. In 1798, the seigneurial rights and aldermen's banks were abolished by the French and replaced by other forms of government. When the Kingdom of the Netherlands was established (December 2, 1813), Wanssum became part of it. However, during the Belgian Revolution (1830), this area opted to join Belgium and joined the German Confederation via the London peace treaty in 1839, from which it left in 1866. Since then, Wanssum has been permanently located in the Netherlands.
