The hunting lodge on the Ukleisee was built in 1776 by the Eutin court architect Georg Greggenhofer on behalf of the Lübeck prince-bishop Friedrich August.

It stands on an elevated headland between the Kellersee and Ukleisee in the middle of an idyllic forest landscape. Over time, the building has been used in many ways as a tea pavilion,

pleasure house for small celebrations and as a hunting lodge.

Wilhelm von Humboldt, Immanuel Geibel and Johann Heinrich Voß were among the lovers of the ice age forest, hill and lake landscape on the Ukleisee.

The princes had also already discovered the picturesque landscape for themselves and built a small residence between the two lakes.

The lake was formed after the glaciers, which were once several hundred meters thick, melted away, as blocks of ice under the rock masses they carried with them only later thawed and left behind water-filled depressions. The body of water, which is now surrounded by beech and oak trees, is up to 16 m deep and 35 hectares in size. There is a mysterious legend surrounding it, according to which a small church is said to have sunk here. To this day, the Ukleisee is rightly a popular tourist destination.

The castle is no longer original, as it burned down a few years ago, but it's still pretty to look at!

From the hunting lodge you have a romantic view of the mystical Ukleisee.
