The Croda da Lago Refuge is located on the shores of Lake Federa. It was built in 1901 with the name "Barbaria Hütte", because it was wanted by the mountain guide Giovanni Barbaria "Zuchin". Only after the First World War did it become "Rifugio Croda da Lago".

Rifugio Croda da Lago is an old fashioned refuge run by the Alverà family with great care and enthusiasm. It offers traditional italian dishes and you can relax in the sauna next to the house after a long day of hiking. Lago Fedèra is a marvelous little lake, be sure to walk around it (about 1 km) and enjoy the views of Croda da Lago, Becco di Mezzodi, the clouds and the rifugio itself reflected by the lake.

The Croda da Lago refuge is an alpine refuge located in the heart of the Ampezzo Dolomites, immersed in high-altitude pastures and surrounded by larches, mountain pines and stone pines. The structure stands on the edge of the suggestive Lake Federa, under the imposing Croda da Lago. In front of it you can enjoy a privileged view of the characteristic Becco di Mezzodì. Open from June to November, it is a destination for walkers, cyclists and mountaineers. The structure has 50 beds divided into dormitories with 6 or 9 beds, and a large dormitory with 15 beds located on the second floor.

The Croda da Lago refuge, named in memory of the partisan Gianni Palmieri (gold medal for military valor), boasts a long history that began in 1901. The first construction, Barbaria Hütte, by the mountain guide Giovanni Barbaria, officially opened the September 2, 1901. In 1905 Barbaria decided to sell the refuge to the Reichenberg section of the D.Oe.A.V. The building, immediately modernized and enlarged, was inaugurated on 31 August 1905 and renamed "Reichenbergerhütte". The management was entrusted to Serafino Lacedelli until the outbreak of the First World War. In 1920, after the conflict, the refuge will pass to the CAI section of Cortina assuming the name of "Rifugio Croda da Lago". Reopened in 1923 after long and expensive works, the management was entrusted to the spouses Achille Toscani and Vittoria Zardini who kept it for 23 years. In 1944, during the Second World War, the refuge was the site of a German garrison and suffered several damages. On 8 April 1946 the CAI decided to grant the management of the refuge to Marcello Siorpaes, nephew of the famous Saint, conqueror of the Becco di Mezzodì. On 18 July 1948, following a contribution made by the Palmieri family in memory of their son who died during the war, it was renamed "Rifugio Gianni Palmieri at Croda da Lago". From father to son, the Siorpaes family managed the refuge until 1993.

From 1994 to today, the management has been entrusted to the Alverà family.
