Beautiful "exposed" mountain hut with a magnificent panorama! The Cinque gates seem like little stones in the landscape ... The way from Averau to Nuvolau is absolutely worth it!

One of the oldest mountain huts in the Dolomites founded in 1883 and the second highest along the Alta Via 1 route with its 2.575 meter height. Luckily it still preserves its original character, you can only climb up here on foot, there is no hot water or shower which also helps keeping it less crowded, at least in the evenings. The full panorama of the surrounding mountains is breathtaking. Best rifugio along the AV1, hands down. Even its name fits perfectly: cloud.

the hike from the closest cable car (Rifugio Averau) on a summer day is similar to the exit of a subway station in term of people density ! Fortunately, the view on the top is rewarding. And the best comes when you go down on the north ridge: after 5 minutes, the crowd is behind and you can enjoy a very nice walk. Beware of the path: 2 short sections of 40m are equipped with a cable. Easy if you have a sure foot.

Great location, good food, very friendly staff. No water for showering, hardly any power sockets in the rooms, so a power bank is necessary.

We walked today 8-6-2023 from Averau to Nuvolau (after starting at Passo Giau). To be clear: the stretch to Nuvolau is not for everyone as far as we are concerned. Today the stones and moss were wet. There was a real risk of falling. It's a real challenge...

The Rifugio Nuvolau is located in an extremely panoramic spot at 2,575 meters above sea level. It can only be reached on foot, by bicycle or via ferrata.

Easy climb to the summit and rifugio, so there are crowds around, which quickly disperse after the lunch break.
                        The views are magnificent.
                        Burgers are grilled outside.

Wonderful place. Very popular but with a fabulous 360° panorama of the most famous peaks of the Dolomites.

Fairly steep hike but beautiful views! The whole hike from Rifugio Averau is only on rocks and it might be hard to find the right path especially when it’s foggy. The elevation of Rifugio Nuvolao is over 2,550 meters, and you should know that the weather up here changes rapidly. Bring appropriate clothes such as a rain jacket, coat, and sunglasses/hat or anything to prevent sunburns importantly in the summer. I reached Rifugio Nuvolau in August at around 5 pm and it was really foggy but had exceptional views towards Cinque Torri and the rest of the Dolomites. It isn’t crowded when it’s foggy or rainy at the Nuvolau peak. Good location to rest and have a beer. The hikes leading to Nuvolau are not hard but not very easy. Overall a great destination in the Dolomites but be prepared!

Very nice view, the via ferrata starts from there.
