    Cape of Souls
Address: Rua de Santa Catarina 428, 4000-444, Porto
    How to get:
    Metro: Bolhão station (line D)
We found the Capela das Almas (Chapel of Souls) walking around the Mercado do Bolhao, very close to the busy Rua Santa Catarina. It is one of the most special churches in Porto, unmistakable for its striking white and blue tile façade and often forgotten on the most touristic routes. The Capela das Almas was built during the 18th century and is neoclassical in style.
However, the tile decoration so characteristic of this church, although it was done in the typical style of the 18th century (the period of maximum splendor of the Portuguese tile), was incorporated later, at the beginning of the 20th century, specifically in 1929.

Until 1929, the chapel's exterior surfaces were plastered and draped in white with no tiles. The covering of the chapel today consists of 15,947 tiles covering approximately 360 square meters of wall. The tiles covering the chapel were designed by Eduardo Leite and made by the Fábrica de Cerâmica Viúva Lamego in Lisbon. Dating back to 1929, they represent the steps in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine, who are venerated in the chapel.

The Capela das Almas is often described as the most beautiful in Portugal. The reason for this is not its size. It is mainly the church's elaborate blue tiles that are often seen in the cityscape of Porto.

However, it is usually only individual strips and parts of the facade that are designed in this way. In the case of the Chapel of Almas, however, it is the entire facade. There are a total of 15,947 of them, which together tell wonderful stories.

They are called azuleios in Portuguese and show various scenes of saints. Most often they are scenes from the life and death of Francis of Assisi and the Virgin Catherine. However, this unique building was dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Almas. Translated, this means Our Lady of Souls.
