In 1948, Cyriel Delannoit became European Champion for the first time. Exactly fifty years after this glorious victory, the Province of East Flanders erected a statue in his honor at the then main entrance of the De Gavers provincial estate in Geraardsbergen. The artwork was created by Jean-Pierre Coopman, another renowned Belgian boxer.

Cyriel Dellanoit was a native of Geraardsbergen who became world boxing champion at the Heysel Arena in 1948, beating Marcel Cerdan. The statue was created by Jean-Pierre Coopman, also a boxer, and is a lifelike representation of Cyriel Dellanoit.
