In 1096, the Bishop of Cambrai transferred St. Peter's Abbey from Dikkelvenne to the newly founded Geraardsbergen at the request of the Count of Flanders. With the transfer of the relics of Saint Adrian in 1110, the monastery became a renowned place of pilgrimage. It long remained an important religious and educational center.

After its seizure during the French Revolution, the impressive building complex was sold and destroyed. Only the gatehouse, the abbot's house, and the coach house escaped demolition in 1797.

In the 19th century, the then-mayor, Dr. Modeste De Cock, converted the buildings into a hydrotherapy facility. He gave the estate its current appearance. Many old ornamental trees date from this period. In 1961, the city of Geraardsbergen became the sole owner of the then-abbey. The park and the abbey were legally protected in 1984 for their cultural-historical value.
