    Hiking

The Abbey Park combines a rich historical past with diverse natural surroundings, play areas for all ages, and quiet spots. It's an inviting, sustainable meeting place in the heart of Geraardsbergen – ideal for walking, playing, or simply relaxing.

In 1096, the Bishop of Cambrai transferred St. Peter's Abbey from Dikkelvenne to the newly founded Geraardsbergen at the request of the Count of Flanders. With the transfer of the relics of Saint Adrian in 1110, the monastery became a renowned place of pilgrimage. It long remained an important religious and educational center.

After its seizure during the French Revolution, the impressive building complex was sold and destroyed. Only the gatehouse, the abbot's house, and the coach house escaped demolition in 1797.

    Hiking

In 1962, the Abbey Park became a “tourist centre”, with a zoo, a playground, a pub, the opportunity to sail a boat on the pond and a real fairytale forest. This imaginative castle could not be missed. The building served as a storage place for the Geraardsbergen giants. Because of this, it soon got the nickname “giant’s den”.
Today, Giants Goliath, Gerarda and Kinneke Baba are no longer in the Abbey Park, but in the town hall on the Markt. The giant’s den is still used as a storage place today.
