In 1096, the Bishop of Cambrai transferred the St. Peter's Abbey from Dikkelvenne to the newly founded Geraardsbergen at the request of the Count of Flanders. By transferring the relics of St. Adrian in 1110, the monastery became a well-known place of pilgrimage. It remained an important religious and educational centre for a long time.
After the seizure during the French Revolution, the powerful building complex was sold and destroyed. Only the gatehouse, the abbot's house and the coach house escaped the demolition hammer in 1797.
In the 19th century, the then mayor, Dr. Modeste De Cock, converted the buildings into a water therapy facility. He gave the domain its current appearance. Many old ornamental trees date from this period. In 1961, the city of Geraardsbergen became the full owner of the then abbey. The park and the abbey were legally protected in 1984 because of their cultural-historical value.

The Abbey Park combines a rich historical past with diverse natural surroundings, play areas for all ages, and quiet spots. It's an inviting, sustainable meeting place in the heart of Geraardsbergen – ideal for walking, playing, or simply relaxing.
