The lock system, built in 1777/78, is a listed building and is part of the Route of Industrial Culture. The following can be read on the information board: "In 1835, 21 2/3 silver groschen had to be paid for the lock of an Aake (= ship). In 1866, 327 loaded ships were locked at this lock."
The lock is in close proximity to the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path and the historic towpath. A towpath, sometimes called a towpath, is a riverside path that was used to pull cargo cranes upriver with draft animals. Here on the Ruhr the flat-bottomed ships were called "Ruhraaken" and they often carried coal. With the lock it was possible to make the Ruhr navigable.

From the Kemnader lake over the Ruhrtalradweg to the Baldeney lake. Short stop at the lock. Here you can also watch the canoeists driving through the boat lane.

Historic towpath, nice spot on the Ruhr, but easy to drive, ancient cobblestones.
