Vordingborg Slotsbanke is one of the largest surviving monuments in Denmark, at 18.7 hectares. The large castle area is an important recreational area for the city and the castle and not least the high goose tower offers a fantastic view of Storstrøm, the peninsula Oringe and the surrounding area. In Borg there is also the South Zealand Museum with the Danish Civic Center and the Historical Botanical Garden at the western entrance.

Vordingborg's landmark The Gänseturm, which is preserved in full on the north side of the castle, is the best-preserved item of the great castle, which in the Middle Ages formed the center of many great events. The Gänseturm was already taken into public ownership on 24.12.1808 and is the first protected ancient monument in Denmark. The Gänseturm is said to have gotten its name from a gold goose, with the Valdemar Atterdag crowned the tower. The goose was intended as a picture of the German Hanseatic cities. The Hanseatic Theater was the main enemy of Valdemar Atterdag, and in his reign of 1340-75 he mockingly called it a bunch of scary but otherwise harmless geese!

Few places from Denmark's past occupy such a central place in history as Vordingborg Castle.
