The valley of the Nete and the Kleine Nete is one of the most important project areas of the Sigma Plan, the future project that protects Flanders against flooding, but also realizes a number of important European nature objectives. Lier is also reaping the benefits of this. South of the city of Lier lies the Lower Nete zone, which has five sub-areas:

Depoldering in Anderstadt 1 gives the Nete more space to flow and creates a beautiful piece of tidal nature.
In both Anderstadt 2 and in the Polder van Lier, the current controlled flood area is being given an additional function as wetland, with reed beds and wide ponds.
Wetland is also being developed in Hof van Lachenen and the Vijvers at Anderstadt, a suitable habitat for many reed dwellers.
