From the 16th century to 1930, the gate served as a prison, hence the current name.
The Prisoner's Gate, formerly Eeckelpoort or Eikelpoort, is a Gothic city gate, later modified with classicist features (± 1728).
The original pointed arch was preserved on the Begijnhofstraat side. On both sides there is a niche with the statues of Saint Roch and Saint Margaret.
