The Cistercian abbey was founded in 1235 by Bartholomeus van Tienen. In 1247 the abbey moved to the present Nazaretdreef.
In 1797 the monastery was dissolved and the property was sold to the public. All monastic buildings were demolished, only the gatehouse and the barn remained. However, the barn was largely destroyed by fire.
