The Protestant Margarethenkirche, a late Gothic hall church in Gotha on Neumarkt, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The church was first mentioned in 1064 in a hereditary interest sale deed. A Latin school existed here from 1405. From 1494 onwards, the Romanesque basilica, starting in the east, was gradually demolished and a late Gothic hall church was built on its foundations, whereby the current building was created in its essential forms. The choir and pointed arch windows were decorated with tracery. Gothic jewelry can still be seen in the sacristy (cross-vaulted ceiling), in the tower window and in the main portal called the “bridal portal”. Due to the expansion of the choir and sacristy, the two east towers were demolished and a new one was built on the west side. (Source: Wikipedia.de)

The building was opened in 1800 as a free school for needy children and is named after the founder of this school, Josias Friedrich Christian Löffler. A Sunday school for craftsmen was housed here from 1802-1805, and in 1912/13 it housed the measuring house of the Gotha municipality. The German Red Cross used the Löfflerhaus from 1936 to 1990.
