Hiking
The building was erected in 1567–77 according to plans by the builders Caspar Mans, Christoph Goetze and Nicolaus Rausch in place of a previous wooden building. It initially served as a department store. From 1640 to 1646 it was the residence of the first Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Ernst I, until he moved to Friedenstein Castle, which was built at his behest.
