The keep of Mildenburg is the oldest part of the castle complex and was built from humped ashlars. It is 27 meters high and is located at the most vulnerable point, the slope rising to the south. The Mildenburg itself was built in the 12th century and served as Mainz's administrative headquarters and customs station from around 1200.

The keep is a square tower with sides measuring 9.5 meters and a base almost 3 meters thick. Some stones bear early stonemason's marks. The castle, including the keep, has been expanded several times and rebuilt after being destroyed. The keep is now an important part of the Miltenberg Castle Museum, which is located in the castle. From its top, you have a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.

The keep is a popular attraction in the Middle Ages.
