Hengebach Castle was built on a greywacke rock in the 11th century. It is one of the oldest buildings in the Eifel. Over the centuries, the historic walls have experienced an eventful history. Various rulers once lived and ruled in the fortress. The lion of the Jülich family of counts still adorns the city coat of arms.
