San Giovanni was rebuilt in the 11th-12th centuries from other older buildings (see the foundation wall towards Calmaggiore including Roman plaque and materials), and was for centuries the only baptismal font in the city. The church, which has changed over time, was restored to its original Romanesque lines in this century.
