The shape of the old, straight Cameralweiher - roughly along today's Elisabethstrasse - can hardly be guessed at in the harmoniously curved banks of the Kaiserteich and Schwanenspiegel. Maximilian Weyhe used the counterguard in front of the Paul Bastion - it was located at about the height of today's Graf-Adolf-Platz - to create the peninsula between the Kaiserteich and Schwanenspiegel. It fits so harmoniously into the park that its military past is no longer visible. It was the intention of the city planners at the time to make the old fortifications disappear as far as possible. Following this principle, Weyhe shaped the area with hollows, elevations and ponds into a natural green island. The ash, linden, maple and chestnut trees with their wide-spreading crowns interact beautifully with the extensive water surfaces. You can never see the entire water surface of almost three hectares from one viewing point.Haroldstrasse, which lies a few metres above the water level of the ponds as if on a rampart, is a little reminiscent of the past. Maximilian Weyhe designed it as a straight promenade with a four-row tree-lined avenue along the "city side" of the park. The boundary between the noisy street and the quiet green area is also marked by history: the iron railings of the old Oberkassel bridge were erected along Haroldstrasse after it was demolished. In 1865, the city bought the Lohhof, a site on the south bank of the Kaiserteich, as well as adjacent plots and expanded the park to its current size of around six hectares. A popular garden café was established on the site, but fell victim to the new construction of the Ständehaus just ten years later. To replace the café, a new, large garden restaurant with boat rental was built on the west side of the Schwanenspiegel. This was very popular with Düsseldorf residents until it was destroyed in World War II and was therefore rebuilt in a new form in the 1950s.duesseldorf.de/stadtgruen/park/staendehaus
