The old town hall opposite the market church is considered to be the oldest preserved secular building in Hanover. Construction began in 1410. The city council met there until 1913, when the new town hall in the Maschpark was completed. In the 19th century, the Hanoverian building officer Conrad Wilhelm Hase had the building renovated and restored to a condition that was assumed at the time to be the original. Hase built a new wing in neo-Gothic style on Karmaschstrasse.

On the southwest side is the so-called Doge's Palace, originally the seat of the city court. It was built in 1844 by the city architect August Heinrich Andreae in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Today the registry office is housed here.

The old town hall now houses restaurants and shops and is also used for events.

The Old Town Hall is an architectural highlight of Hanover's old town - together with the Marktkirche right next door, it is considered the southernmost showpiece of North German brick Gothic.

The Old Town Hall was built for almost a hundred long years. The oldest part on Schmiedestrasse dates back to 1420, and the market wing was built a little later on the foundations of a 13th-century department store. The so-called pharmacy wing, in which the council pharmacy was housed, was attached to this on Köbelinger Straße. This wing was replaced by a building in the Italian Romanesque style.
