I find these pigs fascinating! Today they were all curled up together and snoring. 🤭

      wool pig

      becoming a pet:

"Woolly pigs emerged from the crossing of Serbian Sumadija pigs with the Hungarian breeds Bakonyer and Szalontaer in the 1830s. The breed was officially recognized in 1927. The dense hair in the form of curly bristles, which protects very well against adverse weather, gives it its name. So the woolly pig is ideal for free-range husbandry. Woolly pigs belong to the group of fat pigs and were deliberately bred for high bacon production. They are extremely hardy and disease-resistant. This is how they can contract swine fever and often survive it!

Until the 1950s, woolly pigs were the dominant breed in Hungary. By the late 1970s, however, they had been almost completely ousted from the market by lower-fat English pigs. In 1993 there were only 200 animals left, today there are fortunately almost 60,000 again. Original Hungarian salami is still made from Mangalitza pigs today.

In contrast to “naked” breeds, woolly pigs do not get sunburned, since their bristles protect them. The "fur" is also an effective protection against the cold. Mangalitzas also show natural, original behavior, e.g. when laying down: Here the head is lowered, then the body pushes forward ("ploughing"), this prevents piglets from being crushed."
