In 2004, the club, once one of the leading football clubs in Upper Franconia, had to file for bankruptcy; the team was relegated to the district league in the 1990s. The eventful history began with the founding of the Wacker football club on June 23, 1913. The first notable opponent in 1921 was Bayern Munich. The match ended 3:3. In 1959, FCW achieved a much-celebrated 2:1 victory over multiple German champions FC Nuremberg in the third round of the DFB Cup in front of 6,000 spectators. However, there hasn't been a game in the Wacker Stadium for twenty years now.

In June 2017, an Israeli-Latvian investor consortium announced that it wanted to build a rehabilitation center on the Wacker Stadium site for 70 million euros. Later it was announced that a geriatric complex and a senior residence would also be added. However, nothing has happened. Now the city of Marktredwitz wants to buy the area back, as there are already several other interested parties for the site. It remains to be seen whether and when something new will be built on the Wacker Stadium site.
