The rock formation was named after Albert Leo Schlageter. With his death in 1923, the Freikorps fighter Schlageter was elevated to a national hero by the political right. The "Schlageter cult" produced numerous Schlageter monuments at the time.
After the rock formation near Kleinwendern became a gathering place for neo-Nazis, it was decided in the 1980s to remove the inscription in the rock and rename it "Mühlstein".
In 1799, the formation, behind which a cave is located, was referred to as "the camp".
