The building, in neoclassical style, was inaugurated in 1827 and is the work of the architect Pietro Ghinelli.
In 1943, the bombings of World War II damaged the roof, which led to the interruption of the theater's operation, which then lasted 59 years. In the 1970s, the hall was demolished and reinforced concrete structures were built. After a long period of work, the theater was reopened in 2002 with a modern hall.
