The miners' chapel is one of the few witnesses to Ilmenau's copper and silver mining. The striking half-timbered house was most likely one of the art buildings of the "God's Gift" shaft and contained part of the water art (art wheel) that was necessary to raise the water in the pit. The people gave it the name “Miner’s Chapel” and for a long time the idea that the miners said their prayers here before entering the shaft was held. However, this interpretation is outdated; there is evidence that there was a prayer room in the nearby mine house.
