The fountain was built in honor of Goethe and is a stop on the Ilmenau-Stützerbach Goethe hiking trail. Goethe visited Ilmenau frequently, among other things because of his work as mining minister. There are other tombstones of Goethe's contemporaries in the cemetery, such as the grave of Corona Schröter right at the entrance to the cemetery.
