The fountain of 12 months was inaugurated on the occasion of the National Exhibition of 1898 for the fifty years of the Albertine Statute. According to legend, the fountain was built on the exact spot where Phaeton, son of the Sun God, fell. He ended up in the river Po after stealing his father's chariot and making the horses go wild.
The four groups of statues represent the four rivers that bathe Turin: the Po, the Dora, the Stura and Sangone.
