From the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century, the pheasantry in the castle garden experienced its heyday. Around 1850 around 1,000 animals lived there. Among other things, beavers in the artificially created beaver lodge. However, the pheasantry was discontinued in 1866 for cost reasons.

Update March 2023: Of course no beavers live there anymore. But the facility can still be seen near the now newly built Wildpark Stadium.

Testimony to the menagerie culture in Karlsruhe in the 18th century. The beaver castle from 1788, of which the depression tapering to the south with a round basin, a small water staircase and a basin bordered by rocks have been preserved. Formerly four small pavilions crowned by lanterns were planned around the circular basin made up of large sandstone slabs, which were to function as beaver accommodation. For cost reasons, only two were carried out. To prevent the beavers, which were specially acquired in Salzburg, from escaping, the complex was surrounded by a four-foot high chest wall.
