In the northwestern part of today's Stortorget, the large Helgeand Monastery was located in the Middle Ages. The monastery, with its church, garden and cemetery, took up a quarter of the current square.[3] The Reformation in Denmark (which included Malmö in the 14th century) led to the then mayor Jörgen Kock having the monastery demolished and the current Great Market built in its place. The demolition took place in 1536–1538.
