    Worth seeing historic chapel

    Translated by Google •

When you walk across Karl-Theodor-Platz in Traunstein, you will immediately notice an impressive building: the saltworks chapel of St. Rupert and Maximilian. It is the largest chapel in Germany and a testament to the city's 400-year history of salt.

        🏛️ History & Significance
Built: 1630/31 by local master mason Wolfgang König based on plans by Munich's court master mason Isaak Bader.

Consecrated: Not until 1671 – a full 40 years after completion – to the salt saint St. Rupert and the saltworks founder Duke Maximilian I, Elector from 1623.

Function: Spiritual center of the saltworks workers in the Au; place for church services and devotions.

        🏗️ Architecture
Combination of central and longitudinal space, with a tower and dome.

Stylistically, it combines elements of the Gothic, Renaissance, and early Baroque periods, giving it a simple yet striking elegance.

The interior is adorned with a magnificent altar, a richly decorated stucco ceiling, and paintings depicting scenes from the lives of the two patron saints.

        📍 Location & Visit
        Address: Karl-Theodor-Platz, 83278 Traunstein.

Visit: Outside is possible at any time. The interior is only accessible during church services or weddings.

        🧂 Context: Salt History
The chapel is closely linked to Traunstein's 400-year salt history.

It is considered the largest chapel in Germany and was part of the infrastructure surrounding the saltworks, which once housed the world's first pipeline.
