The Stiepel Tower (Stiepel = "support"), built in the 15th century from rough quarry stone, belongs to the group of Steingaden, together with the Blücher Tower - also known as the Court Tower - and the bell tower of St. Lambertus. The Steingaden were towers into which the population could retreat in times of danger. Today, only the stump of the Stiepel Tower remains.

Hiking

This tower was originally part of the Stiepelhof, which existed there until 1962. It is the last example of rural stone sheds in the Essen area that served as a place of defence and refuge. Due to the embankment, the tower now appears smaller than it once did.
