The sunken road has been eroded into the slope over the centuries and is richly overgrown with summer oaks and common ash trees, among other things. A unique biotope for many animals and plants. As you will notice yourself when you walk here, a sunken road has a different climate than an open field. Many solitary wild bees also like to use this microclimate and open sandy areas in the sunken roads to make their ground nests.
Animals find a lot of food and hiding places here. If you pay close attention, you will see entrances to holes and badger dens in the hillsides.

Hollow roads are typical of the landscape of Haspengouw and Voeren and therefore have great landscape value. They are also witnesses to historic land use. Some of these roads have been used since the Middle Ages.

Hollow roads are a biotope in themselves; often rather bushy, but sometimes also with valuable grassy slopes. We often find specific plant species and animals find their food, shelter and nesting places here. Hollow roads also form important nature connections and are often the only escape options for many animals between the intensively cultivated fields. Reason enough to preserve sunken roads.

It is useful to know that sunken roads are protected by the nature decree.

Sunken roads are found only in hilly regions, such as here in Haspengouw. They were created by human intervention. Farmers used horse and cart routes, taking the shortest route from their farm to the higher fields. Due to the heavy use of the unpaved road, the track had little chance of vegetation, and the loosened sand washed down the slope with every rain shower. Thus, the road eroded ever deeper.
