The town hall and the market square form the center of the town of Jüterbog.
Its construction history is not clearly clarified. A document from 1285, when the Archbishop of Magdeburg Erich von Brandenburg donated an area on the market square to the city in order to build a town hall on it, gives an indication of the start of construction. This would make the Jüterbog town hall the oldest in the state of Brandenburg.
The building is 39 meters long and 16.5 meters wide. It is a brick building with a gable roof. The main entrance today is in the court arbor on the north side of the town hall. The painting of the beam ceiling dates from 1928.

A journey into history - Jüterbog, the capital of FlämingThe old town is dominated by buildings from the Middle Ages, with defensive towers, huge churches and monasteries and the oldest town hall in the state of Brandenburg.
Jüterbog has been the scene of important historical events over the centuries. Wallenstein stayed here during the Thirty Years' War, the Prussian King Friedrich opened the Seven Years War of Jüterbog, and at the time of Kaiser Wilhelm, Jüterbog was the largest garrison town in Germany.
We begin our city tour of the Monks Church, a Franciscan monastery church and are surprised when we enter the externally well-preserved church. Under the pulpit, interested visitors sit comfortably in armchairs and leaf through information brochures. The imposing brick hall church became a "cultural temple" and information center. From Mönchenstraße we reach the market square in a few minutes, from where we begin our walk through the past. Our gaze immediately falls on the gothic town hall. Upstairs is the former princely room, a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture. Wallenstein and Frederick the Great wrote history here.
At the left-hand corner of the council stands the statue of St. Mauritius. He was and is the patron saint of the city. From the market square we turn into the Nikolaikirchstraße, which is characterized by half-timbered houses from the Middle Ages and are soon in front of the mighty Nikolaikirche. It is with its nearly 70 meter high, differently designed towers from the 14./15. Century the landmark of the city. In the splendidly painted interior, you can admire the frescoes, the medieval altar and the Tetzel box.We continue our way through Kleine Kirchstraße. At the street "Planeberg" we come across the Abtshof, a brick building from 1500, which served the nearby Kloster Zinna as a city residence. At the Zinnaer Straße we turn right to stand in front of the Zinnaer Tor after a few meters. To the left extends the now completely restored city wall. At the Wursthof we keep left and turn halfway to the market square right. Now we are back in front of the monks church, where our interesting city walk began.

Jüterbog is a small town with a historic town center.
In the year 1007, Thietmar von Merseburg, the chronicler of Archbishop Tagino von Magdeburg, mentioned the village settlement with castle wall as "Jutriboc" for the first time. In 1157 the Archbishop of Magdeburg conquered the place and converted it into a German Burgward. In 1174 the place received city rights, the second oldest in today's state of Brandenburg. In this document Jüterbog is referred to as the center of the provincia Iutterbogk (Land Jüterbog). This land (or little country) Jüterbog also comprised the Zinna monastery, Luckenwalde, Trebbin and extended north to the Seddiner See at the gates of Potsdam.
Around 1350 a leprosarium (an infirmary and a hospital) can be found in Jüterbog "in front of the Zinnaer Tor". The leprosy chapel was demolished in 1523 and the hospital in 1711.
From 1517 onwards it is proven that the preacher of indulgences Johann Tetzel appeared on behalf of the Archbishop of Mainz in several Central German locations, including in Jüterbog. This was an occasion that led to Martin Luther's 95 theses and thus to the Reformation.
