St. Nikolai Kirche

The St. Nikolai Church of Jüterbog is the largest and oldest church in the city. In good weather you can climb the church tower with its 200 steps and enjoy the view over the city and the Jüterboger surroundings.

Martin Luther, Thomas Müntzer and Johann Tetzel preached here. Wallenstein was here in the Thirty Years' War and Prussian King Frederick opened the 7-year war here. At Kaiser-Wilhelm times, Jüterbog was the largest garrison town in Germany.
Today you can still visit three city gates a part of the city wall and three large churches. Among them the Liebfrauenkirche, which is the oldest building in the city (1174)

In the Nikoleikirche is the notorious Tetzelkasten in which Tetzel hoarded the money for the indulgence letters. With this money, the St. Peter's was co-financed significantly.

The 217 steps up to the unmistakable church towers of the Nikolaikirche reward you with a great view.

First mentioned in 1307, the large Gothic hall church in its present dimensions was probably only built in the following years. The ambulatory was added by 1488, and the towers were completed 20 years later. From this early period there are exceptionally numerous works of art from the sacrament house, wall paintings to the numerous altar works of art. The Reformation reshaped the church interior. The rich decoration of the pulpit and gallery pictures bear witness to the time before the Thirty Years' War. After that, stalls, a new altar and, above all, a new large organ were added.
Today, the church impresses with its good state of preservation, as well as with a size and wealth that is completely untypical for the Fläming. It thus testifies to the great importance of the church and the city around 1500.
