The Heisbroek is a water-rich nature reserve managed by Natuurpunt.
Many years ago, when the Scheldt was not yet embanked, this area consisted of a network of channels and side arms. The Scheldemeersen looked like the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe.
Due to the low current, dead plant material accumulated, which led to the formation of peat. Peat was extracted here towards the end of the 19th century.
Natuurpunt has evolved the peat pit into a valuable nature reserve.
